The existing house was quite large and provided lots of rooms however none of them provided a real connection to the garden or a family space for holidays, entertaining and when guests visited. To overcome this issue Clayton Architecture identified the kitchen as the heart of this particular household and decided that was the area to focus on. The kitchens location also provided the best opportunity for views out to the gardens. The design had to be in keeping with the rest of the home which was achieved by going with a brick parapet detail, the second objective was to provide as much natural light as possible deep into the space. This was achieved by having bi fold doors on two sides of the new extension as well as a large glass roof lantern, not only do these elements create a bright space but when entertaining in future the kitchen can be fully opened up to the garden which provides a whole new aspect and wow factor that didn’t exist before. To top off the design one of the full height kitchen cupboard doors along the back of the room opens up and leads through to a hidden utility area that you would never know existed.
